Research Orientation

Pól McLernon’s work constitutes a sustained transdisciplinary investigation into resonance as a fundamental physical condition - one that operates across scales from the quantum field to the architectural cavity to the human body, and whose behaviour at every scale implicates the position and nature of the observer.
Trained in architecture and research architecture, and working across sound, spatial practice, performance and critical theory, his research advances a non-representational model of perception in which experience arises through dynamic coupling between organism and environment - rather than through the internal reconstruction of external stimuli.

Core Research

This investigation has arrived, by its own internal logic, at a specific threshold: the point at which questions of vibration, frequency, and embodied coupling require deeper engagement with fundamental physics to be pursued rigorously.
That threshold is consciousness itself - the shared apex of two apparently distinct lines of inquiry: the measurement problem in quantum mechanics, where the observer’s position is constitutive of physical outcome; and the acoustic geometry of Neolithic chambered structures, where resonant frequencies measurably alter embodied physiological and perceptual states. The identification of the Higgs Boson as a resonance - read from a characteristic pattern in a decay curve rather than observed directly - exemplifies the mode of inquiry this research seeks to extend: knowledge inferred from the behaviour of systems around an impenetrable centre, through structured coupling between investigative apparatus and physical phenomenon.

Methodological Signature

The research operates through a dual methodological structure: engaging with meaurable phenomena - acoustic response, frequency behaviour, spatial dynamics, physiological sensing - while advancing artistic practice as a distinct and irreplaceable epistemic mode. The researcher is always already inside the field being investigated.
Projects range form the acoustic and political analysis of colonising surveillance systems in Belfast and the electromagnetic spectrum as a site of suppressed transmission, to the performative inhabitation of a Neolithic resonant chamber in Orkney, to expanded cinematic installations in which the observer’s physical position determines what is real within the field they inhabit.
Across these investigations, the methodological signature is consistent: perceptual attunement as epistemic instrument, immanent inquiry over detached observation, and long-duration engagement over extractive encounter.
